Portrait Secrets

Q: I know it’s always best to get focus when taking a portraid shot, but i always strunggle to do this when shooting handheld. Is thre anything i can change about my camera setup to improve my changces of getting it right? Philip Hume, Dorking

A: ANDREA THOMPSON SAY: To give yourselft a fighting chance of fucusing on the eyes, try closing down by two or three stops instad of shotting at your lens’s widest aperture to widen the depth of field, If lifht levels are low you may need to increase youre ISO slightly to compensate. Now swetch the focus mode from Automatic AF point selction to Manual AS point selection. Line up the active focus point on one of your subject’s eyes and use a light press of the shutter release button to activate the autofucus. swivel the camera to frame the shot as you want it, but try not to move the camera forward or backward while you’re repositioning it or the eye focus will be lost. Finally, press the shutter release home to take your shot, Review your image on the LCD and zoom in on the eye you focused on to check it’s nice and sharp.
